Brick Bradford Sundays November 25, 1934 to October 26, 1947

10/16/2013

As promised, here are scans / compilations of 17 of the first 23 Brick Bradford story lines -- plus the Time Top topper separated out -- from November 25, 1934 to October 26, 1947. Oh go ahead -- you can say "wow!" :)

As usual, I have some requests so that I can complete the other 6 story lines.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I should note that the early Brick Bradfords Sundays were often carried by small newspapers that did not print a Sunday edition, and included a color section in the Saturday paper. Some strips, therefore, may carry the Saturday date. I've 'corrected' these to Sunday in the file names, but I may have overlooked a couple.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, I've posted S001 even though the first 10 strips are in French. I could scantillate these but I'm still hoping someone finds English equivalents. I did include one of these in English bur the quality is so low that its virtually useless except to give the correct color scheme. So I'm looking for:

Brick Bradford 19341125 to 19350126

The last 4, dated in 1935, are in the 1971 Pacific Comics Club's Brick Bradford in The Land of the Lost, albeit in black and white. I don't have this book -- hopefully someone visiting here does.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S008 Travel Through Time (Traveller In Time) (12121937 – 07101938)

I'm missing 10 of the 31 strips:

Brick Bradford 19380123

Brick Bradford 19380227

Brick Bradford 19380306 to 19380403

Brick Bradford 19380508

Brick Bradford 19380703

Brick Bradford 19380710

All of these were printed in English [though miscolored and occasionally with diminished art] in David McKay's King Comics #32 to 34, 36  and 38 ( from 1938 and 1939).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S009 Pirates Of The 17th Century (World Of 1685) (07171938 – 02121939)

I'm missing 8 of the 31 strips:

Brick Bradford 19380717

Brick Bradford 19380724

Brick Bradford 19380807 to 19380911

Again, all of these can be found in English in David McKay's King Comics #38, 39 and 40

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S010 The Mummy (02191939 – 11121939)

I'm missing 12 of the 31 strips:

Brick Bradford 19390416

Brick Bradford 19390423

Brick Bradford 19390507 to 19390528

Brick Bradford 19390702

Brick Bradford 19390716

Brick Bradford 19390730

Brick Bradford 19390820

Brick Bradford 19390827

Brick Bradford 19390910

Anyone with the David McKay books could also rescue me -- they are in King Comics #48, 49, 51 to 53

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S013 The Southern Treasure (Martin Bloodstone) (03301941 – 09281941)

I'm missing just 2 of the 31 strips:

Brick Bradford 19410427

Brick Bradford 19410824

In English, these can be found in King Comics (David McKay) #74 and 79

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S015 Cities Of Future (Futura) (01/04/1942 – 10/11/1942)

I'm either missing or have low quality scans of 36!!!! of the 41 strips:

Its McKay to the rescue again by owners of King Comics #83 to 93 (01/1944)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S016 The Men Of The North (The Ice King) (10/18/1942 – 04/25/1943)

I'm either missing or have low quality scans of 22!!!! of the 28 strips:

It'd be McKay saving my butt again by owners of King Comics #94 to 100 (01/1944)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are three other things I need scanned if anyone had them.

Two Big Little Books that reprint the strips in altered format:

Big Little Book #1468 Brick Bradford with Brocco the Modern Buccaneer (Whitman, 1938)

Big Little Book #1059 Brick Bradford in the City Beneath the Sea (Saalfield, 1934)

and -- especially!! -- the Brick Bradford strips that René Brantonne did in France during World War II when Nazi occupation halted the import of US comics, so Brantonne quickly drew a short-lived version. It appeared in publisher Cino Del Duca first series that he called HURRAH!, which carried, among other US features, Brick Bradford and The Time Top [Les Explorateurs du Temps] by Ritt / Gray from HURRAH!'s dated 06/05/1935 to 04/16/1942. The only precise issue I know about is #324, which is signed by him.

Update 10/17/2013: I received the single strip that Brantonne prepared for HURRAH! #324, intended to follow the events depicted in the April 19, 1941 strip. The next issue, HURRAH! went back to the Ritt-Gray continuity and #326 carried a note saying that the events in Brantonne’s page were to be ignored! Except by us, of course :) Brick was finally cancelled in #334.

Robert Bradley, however, notes that there are other European original Brick pages! The weekly magazine Spirou, between number 51 of 1940 and number 6 of

1941, published 8 original pages following the American pages of May 11, 1940 to end the story The Crown of the Desert’s Kings. The author and artist are unknown. I've included the first.

There is one other "strip" I know of that is not by Clarence Gray or Paul Norris [or one of their ghosts like Lew Sayre Schwartz] and that is a promotional item advertising the 1940

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some notes on the archives I'm providing:

They are all stored in rar format, and subtexted "Rev 0". That way if anybody finds a copy floating about, they won't get confused about the strips within. As each story is upgraded, we go to Rev 1, Rev2, etc until there's finally 600dpi color scans of all strips [which, of course, will be never]

You may find more than one copy of a strip in an archive. I replace the bw [black and white] or ebay [low quality] ones with color copies when I get them, though I may include both if I notice art or text differences, or even two color scans if one is recolored [usually from an overseas printing]

I include the source of the scan in the title when I know it.

I'm now taking a short break, hoping someone out there has scans I missed, or better quality images. I'm pretty sure I have near-complete Clarence Gray Sundays through May 26, 1957, and I also have a huge stack of Paul Norris Sundays that I need to scan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is also a mystery in the transition from the S006 to S007 storys.

I have strips that are clearly dated 10/16/1937 and 10/30/1937, but King Comics #28 provides me with TWO strips that clearly belong in between them for 10/23/1937!!! I'm not sure what could have happened here!

Update 10/17/2013 -- mystery solved!! The scans were supplied to me in the wrong order and without sufficient coffee, I failed to notice :) I've updated the Time Top scan to Rev 1 to reflect the corrections.
